Locks to prevent concurrent editingWhat are locks? Locks are temporary permission restrictions that prevent two people from editing the same item at the same time. Simultaneous editing is usually a bad thing as when the two people save their changes, the first person to save ends up losing their changes as they get overwritten by the second. Which items have locks? Locks are provided to protect the text of Page components. How it works The system locks the page when you open it for editing, and then when you save the page it removes the lock. The locks are applied automatically, and unless there is a contention you will never be aware that they are working behind the scenes. If someone tries to edit the page whilst you are editing it they are shown a message informing them who is editing the page. If they are in a usergroup which has control over the usergroup you are in, they are also given the option to override your lock (so putting your changes at risk). Forgotten locks If something happens whilst you are editing and you don't get to save the page, the lock remains. There is no timeout on this. However you cannot lock yourself out, so you can always re-open a page you have locked, and then save the page to remove the lock. |
